Stretch goals work psychologically by tapping into your intrinsic motivation and desire for achievement. When you are presented with a challenge that pushes your limits just beyond what you believe you can achieve, it triggers a psychological response that motivates you to strive for higher levels of performance and fosters a sense of accomplishment when you succeed.

One key psychological mechanism at play is goal-setting theory. When you set specific, challenging goals (like stretch goals), it increases your focus, effort and persistence toward achieving those goals.
Stretch goals provide you with a clear target that is ambitious yet attainable with effort, driving you to exert extra effort to reach beyond your current capabilities.
Moreover, stretch goals promote a growth mindset. Instead of viewing abilities as fixed traits, you believe that you can improve through effort and perseverance.
When presented with stretch goals, you are encouraged to embrace challenges, learn from setbacks and develop new skills, leading to personal and professional growth.
Additionally, stretch goals leverage the principles of motivation theory, particularly intrinsic motivation. Unlike extrinsic rewards, which may lose their effectiveness over time, intrinsic motivation arises from internal factors such as the enjoyment of the task itself or the sense of mastery it brings.
Stretch goals tap into your intrinsic motivation by aligning with your values, interests and aspirations, making the pursuit of these goals inherently rewarding.
However, it's essential to balance stretch goals with realistic expectations and adequate support. Setting goals that are too far out of reach can demotivate you and lead to burnout or disengagement. Providing resources, feedback and recognition can help you stay motivated and resilient in the face of challenges associated with stretch goals.
